Summer 2008 Internship Overview
Looking for an internship to gain quality, hands-on public relations experience? At Bader Rutter, you’ll be a member of the state’s largest PR agency and work in a fast-paced environment alongside experienced professionals to execute strategic B2B and B2C public relations for major, national brands.

Intern responsibilities include:
o Material development (media advisories, new releases, newsletter articles, etc.)
o Event coordination

Qualifications:
o Strong writing and verbal communication skills

About the Event: You will assist the special events staff with organizing the 31st annual Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk for Children’s Hospital. This Milwaukee tradition is an 8K run with a 3 mi and 5 mi family walk. The event is the largest combined run/walk in the state of Wisconsin attracting more than 16,000 participants. Since the event’s inception, the run/walk has raised more than 9.4 million dollars for the kids of Wisconsin.

Job Description: Implement the general public notification plan. You will work closely with the business associations and residential community living along the 8k race course in an effort to communicate the parking restrictions and street closures.

Work closely with manager and volunteer committee to coordinate various groups/bands as route entertainment for the day-of-the-event. Conduct phone solicitations for product/merchandise donations for event, as assigned.

Must display skills in Microsoft Office. Receive valuable experience working in a fun, fast-paced, professional development office as a member of our team!

Job Description: Coordinate the Health & Fitness Fair from development of promotional materials to soliciting vendor participation. The Health & Fitness Fair is a component of the event’s Finish Line Celebration on the Summerfest grounds following the run/walk.

Coordinate and send out invitations to the Briggs & Al’s Run VIP party post race. This will also involve tracking responses.

University of Dreams Information: The University of Dreams Summer Internship Program is the premier Summer Internship Program for college students. University of Dreams provides college and university students an 8‐week, all‐inclusive summer internship experience in Chicago.

Included in the experience is guaranteed internship placement in the participants field of interest, professional resume revision, interview coaching, 6 weekend activities to explore
the city of destination, a weekly seminar series to equip participants with career development skills, full room and board with on‐site staff, a meal plan, academic credit from our partnering university, transportation to work and to planned weekend activities. Chicago Scholarship Information: The Candi Carter Scholarship

As a distinguished guest speaker for our Chicago Program, we are proud to honor her commitment to supporting students’ dreams with the Candi Carter Scholarship. Candi is a senior producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show. She has been with the show for over twelve years. Her career began with CNN. She then went on to work for WISN TV in Milwaukee where she won an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Programming. Candi is a graduate of Boston College and is married with a four‐year‐old son.

Eligibility Requirements: All applicants must be African American students interested in a career in communications.

Yellow Pages Association (YPA) Advertising Competition

The 2007-2008 Yellow Pages Association (YPA) Advertising Competition provides real-world experience for students interested in pursuing an education or career in advertising, marketing, graphic design or related fields. Competition winners and their faculty sponsors will share in nearly $10,000 in total prize awards.

Beyond providing valuable experience and monetary prizes, the competition is designed to reward and showcase excellence in student-created advertising. Competition winners will have their work displayed on the YPA Academic web site and the work will be honored at the YPA Annual Convention.

A great learning experience

Last year over 1,500 students at 213 schools participated. 100% of instructors and 98% of students were pleased with their experience. Representative comments included:

NEW THIS YEAR: A real client

Terminix has agreed to serve as this year's client. Students entering the 2007-2008 competition will create two Yellow Pages print ads and one Internet Yellow Pages ad for this client, who will also play a significant role in the competition judging. Students can work alone or in teams of up to three, under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Multiple teams can enter from the same class or school and the entry can be the result of an in-class assignment, if desired. All entries are due by April 25, 2008.

Prize awards will be distributed as follows:

1st Place: $2,500 to winning team; $750 to faculty sponsor

2nd Place: $1,500 to winning team; $500 to faculty sponsor

3rd Place: $750 to winning team; $350 to faculty sponsor

Honorable Mentions (up to 3): $300 to winning team; $200 to faculty sponsor

Beyond monetary prizes, entry and success in the competition can help students beef-up their resumes. All competition winners will receive a personal letter of commendation from Neg Norton, President, YPA.

Northwestern Mutual Life - College Student - Communications

BASIC FUNCTION:
Supports the implementation of Investment Products & Services (IPS) operations and employee communications, including writing, proofing, updating and distributing operations news to the field and internal communications to home office employees. This position also supports the logistics and execution of employee engagement initiatives, along with incorporating and updating content on the retail investments field-facing Web site, the internal home office Web site for IPS employees and bulletin board material within IPS.

QUALIFICATIONS:
This position has been classified as an Associated Person under NMIS guidelines and requires fingerprinting and completion of required form. Sophomore, Junior or Senior college student pursuing degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related field. Must be able to work 12 – 20 hours per week. Minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Knowledge of Associated Press styles. Proficient business and journalistic writing and editing skills. Strong communication skills to include the ability to speak clearly and express self well in groups and in one-to-one conversations. Ability to prepare and deliver concise and clear presentations. Alliance for the Great Lakes - Outreach Associate

Summary
The Alliance for the Great Lakes is hiring an Outreach Associate to work primarily in
southeastern Wisconsin to educate key constituencies and organize volunteers to support the oldest Great Lakes citizens’ organization in North America as a voice for clean water, water conservation, fish and wildlife habitat restoration.

Responsibilities
• Coordinate and assist in running Adopt-a-Beach in Wisconsin through planning, recruitment, education, communication, and coordination efforts such as press releases, web updates, mailings and workshops. Correspond and communicate with schools, volunteers and a variety of community-based organizations.

• Build partnerships to implement the Adopt-a-Beach program and Great Lakes in My
World curriculum, including: networking, making presentations, running trainings and
other workshops, initiating partnership opportunities and attending meetings mostly
in Wisconsin, with a focus on Racine and the greater Milwaukee area. Recruit, organize, and inspire volunteer groups, students and educators from diverse communities to take part in Adopt -a-Beach and use curriculum activities from the Alliance’s Great Lakes in My World educational resource.

Knowledge/Skills
• Extraordinary “people” skills, including the ability to motivate a wide variety of ages,
organizations, including schools, civic groups, garden clubs, and community-based
environmental organizations. Working with volunteers requires patience and a positive disposition.

• Excellent listening, writing, and speaking skills. Job will require public speaking in a clear, effective manner, newsletter and website article writing, other communication abilities and a willingness to share your enthusiasm for the Great Lakes.

• Attraction to mission-driven public interest work, often with resource limitations.

• Understanding of environmental education, experience working with youth and teachers and basic knowledge of Wisconsin school system functions. Undergraduate degree, with at least three years of professional experience in
natural resource-related education is preferred.

• Encourage integration and teamwork among staff of varying expertise and located in different offices.

• Dedication to the mission of the Alliance and an appreciation for working in a resource-limited, not-for-profit environment.

Job Parameters
• This is a part-time, contractual position, with the possibility of becoming a full -time position contingent on performance, funding and organizational need . Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.

• After-hours (evening, weekend) work and travel is required for this position, most of which will be in Southeastern Wisconsin. Some travel to other parts of the Great Lakes region may be necessary on rare occasion. Must have a valid drivers license and excellent an excellent driving record. Access to a personal car is desirable.

• The Education Program Director will supervise this position.
